harper and the cons … tea party north

stop harper now_hip is everything blogwell, now that all the teabagger wannabes and pseudo-christian-right-wing ideologues have packed up their holier than thou attitudes and headed home to “harperville”, where they and their self anointed and appointed leader stephen “this country’s for sale to the highest bidder” harper can get on with the business of selling off their country and selling out it’s citizens …
here’s a summary of just some of the new policies of the conservative party that passed at the party’s weekend convention in calgary, and why they’re bad for canadians everywhere …
and how they follow the tried and true tea party/gop strategies employed for the last 30 years or so south of the border …
the party wants the government to:
– bring in a much less progressive taxation system so as to cut taxes for the rich and have less tax revenue overall to pay for vital programs and services, allowing the harper government to use the “we just don’t have the money to support environmental, financial or safety net programs … this is the “make government small enough to drown in a bathtub” approach we see passing for right wing governance south of the 49th the last several years …
– attack collective bargaining by putting an end to mandatory union membership because unions “limit the economic freedom of canadians and stifle economic growth”, because if you bust the unions, you bust the middle class, and they are way more likely to vote anything but conservative …they also make an awesome and convenient “boogeyman” for the ideologically driven, factually challenged on the far right … a tried and true right wing ideology/strategy employed by the republican/tea party/right wing in the usa …
– undermine the ability of unions to bargain on an equal footing with employers by having an opt-out provision of union dues … again union busting at it’s core …
– require greater transparency on activities of federal public service unions in a bid to restrict their ability to fight for strong public services for everyone … more strategy from the “make government small enough to drown in a bathtub” playbook …
– gut public sector pensions in a race to the bottom on pensions so defined benefit plans become obsolete in both the private and public sectors, and retirement insecurity in canada is universal …
– bring public sector benefits and pensions in line with the private sector to lower the bar for all, rather than raise the bar for everyone …
– hands off our guns … wow, can anyone say “nra” “whip up the fear” …
– condemn the “discrimination of girls through gender selection” in a push to reopen the abortion debate in canada … opening up the abortion debate is pretty much self-explanatory, holier than thou, right wing suppression of women …and what fucking debate??!? … abortion is legal in canada … there is no debate …
– fight efforts to “legalize euthanasia or assisted suicide.” … more pseudo-religious, tea party inspired “only we know what’s best for you” right wing, regressive thinking …
– let faith-based groups refuse the use of their facilities to people who don’t line up with their beliefs … see above, and don’t forget to appease the fanatics … also a subtle, yet very effective “opening of the door” to the beginning of the tearing down and privatization of the health care system in canada …
– the party, whose members have often complained of bias in the CBC, believes that the best way to “control” the network is for the government to establish “distinct” budgets for the tv and radio arms of the corporation … the “fox news, control the propaganda and cut back on the facts that could hurt the party’s agenda” strategy …
”push our propaganda and agendas or lose your funding” …
– to “properly” punish criminals who are convicted of more than one “serious crime,” they should serve their sentences “consecutively rather than concurrently” so that they would spend more time in jail … because the “prison planet/corporate prisons” business model is a guaranteed money maker for many of harper’s supporters and backers, plus it plays beautifully into the “whip up the fear, because only we can protect you” mentality …
4saleeven though steve “the grifter” harper is not bound by these policies, with his government lagging in the polls and as he tries to run from a bevy of self-inflicted scandals that continue to threaten his so called “government”, he will come under enormous and very real pressure to adopt the contentious and uber-right-wing policies to satisfy his core base of supporters in the next election …
the conservative party of canada is very quickly, and very willingly becoming the “tea-party/gop northern division” …
as ndp house leader nathan cullen, who attended the convention as an observer said, “the conservatives passed resolutions that are very right wing” … “the tea party couldn’t be happier,” in reference to the conservative wing of the u.s. republican party … cullen also noted that he believes that harper is allowing an ultra-conservative faction to spread its wings in his party because he needs their votes … “a desperate prime minister needing to at least shore up his base goes to the lowest common denominator he can find … and this is all the tea party north stuff” …

and in a tea party/republican strategies sort of related story …
Confirmed: Canada 2011 polls fraudulent
The Canadian Federal Court has confirmed that the country’s 2011 federal election, which led to the victory of Stephen Harper’s government, was fraudulent.
The court emphasized in a Thursday ruling that it has found in no uncertain terms that widespread election fraud took place during the vote.
The ruling also stated that “there was an orchestrated effort to suppress votes during the 2011 election campaign by a person with access to the [Conservative Party’s] CIMS database.”
Accordingly, the Council of Canadians has called on the Conservative Party to investigate the issue. It says anything less at this point would be a cover-up on behalf of the Conservatives.
The Council of Canadians says that the non-cooperation, obstructionism, and attempts to disrupt the Federal Court case by the CIMS makes it look like Prime Minister Harper has something to conceal.
Garry Neil, Executive Director of the Council of Canadians said “This Federal Court decision is a major indictment of the Conservative Party of Canada.”
“Either senior leaders of the Conservative Party were directly involved in election fraud or they were astoundingly negligent in securing access to their voter database. Illegal or incompetent–just like in the Senate scandal.”
