Boehner Angles to Kill Jobless Benefits As Senate Moves Forward
In a surprising move Tuesday, six Republicans joined Senate Democrats to break a filibuster and advance a three-month revival of unemployment insurance
that recently expired for some 1.3 million Americans.
But the proposal faces a major obstacle before passing the Senate, and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is already angling to quash the effort.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), seeking to give Republicans a pretext for opposing the continuation of the popular program,
offered an amendment to fund the extension by delaying Obamacare’s individual mandate for one year — a proposal he knew would be a nonstarter for Democrats. Indeed, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) immediately rejected it.
“I have to admit I’m a little surprised at the fervor with which the majority is dedicated to reviving the expired emergency unemployment benefits,” McConnell said.
In response to the vote, Boehner made clear that the House wasn’t interested in extending the jobless benefits. He argued that the 26-week status quo for unemployment compensation was satisfactory. (The emergency benefits program, first passed in 2008, extends that to 99 weeks.) “Far too many Americans are still unemployed in President Obama’s economy. For each of them, it’s a personal crisis that we cannot overlook. Getting these people back on their feet starts with a strong safety net – six months of unemployment benefits – that we continue to have in this country,” Boehner said in a statement. “But the ultimate solution to joblessness is more jobs.”

gop xmas card by hip is everythingwhere are all those fucking jobs, jobs, jobs” you and yer’ d-bag tea-cronies were railing on about in the 2010 election cycle john? …
oh yeah, you a-holes stood in the way of EVERY SINGLE bill that even smelled like it might create a job …
you and your fellow baggers have blocked every jobs bill brought up and sure as hell haven’t introduced even one of your own …
plus all yer’ doucherocket red state governor buddies helped out by offing as many public sector jobs as they could …
we are literally talking about “the least among us” now, and the level of contempt and disdain that republicans display is shocking, and unprecedented in my lifetime …
maybe ever …
so here’s an idea: how about the democrats offer to pay for this extension by ending oil subsidies/tax breaks, then make the republicans reject that proposal publicly …
let’s see how freaking serious this clown car parade really is about “spending” …
and why are publicly traded corporations, many, many of whom are making historically record profits being given subsidies? …
or how about this? …
afghanistan is costing $1.75 BILLION per week …
how about the u.s.  get the fuck out of there and use that money for, oh I don’t know, american citizens that need a hand instead? …
or maybe just defund the part of the nsa that snoops on americans …
that would cover it all off in no time at all …
